Good book, bad movie。
Cheri Branham,
Great BookI can't wait to see the movie now!。 A great book about two brave men and their fellow soldiers and how they went through so much during the Korean。 Amazing friendtip between the two main characters and how they helped each to the end。 Great BookI can't wait to see the movie now!。 A great book about two brave men and their fellow soldiers and how they went through so much during the Korean。 Amazing friendtip between the two main characters and how they helped each to the end。 。。。more
Jason,
Amazing book。 A truly epic story with amazing pace and the author did a great job of weaving in history but making it More about the friendship than the racial or political topics。 I would recommend to anyone and everyone。

Sandy Reenders,
Read this book since the movie is coming out, and really enjoyed the story。 Solid writing, although sometimes the action was too abrupt, and I felt like a missed something- when really the book was missing a transition。 Less info about the upbringing of the characters than I expected My favorite moments/thoughts on the book:Made me grateful for my freedom- Jesse’s parents were sharecroppers with no hope of escaping that life。 A good example of how some people have to have an extreme circumstance Read this book since the movie is coming out, and really enjoyed the story。 Solid writing, although sometimes the action was too abrupt, and I felt like a missed something- when really the book was missing a transition。 Less info about the upbringing of the characters than I expected My favorite moments/thoughts on the book:Made me grateful for my freedom- Jesse’s parents were sharecroppers with no hope of escaping that life。 A good example of how some people have to have an extreme circumstance to admit God exists- as in the story of the guy who ignored God until his life was at risk, and went on to be a devoted Christian Jesse was given a watch equivalent to $600 today by the ship’s black crew, since they were so inspired by hope at a black man becoming a pilot Touching story of how all Jesse’s friends donated to his family when he died 。。。more

Great book about a great hero and warrior!
Emily,
What can be said? There are endless stories of extraordinary human beings’ exceptional heroism in excruciating circumstances。 They will always be amazing, and they never get old。 Ensign Jesse Brown’s story is unique not only because he was the Navy’s first Black carrier pilot, but because each life is unique and worthy of witness, especially in the context of the most monumental of all occurrences: war。 Some of the writing felt a bit cliched, but its flaws were overpowered by the reality of the What can be said? Jane,
All in all, this is a 4。5 star book。 It’s well researched and the chapters flow at a good pace without being too hurried or too slow。 I will note that this book is difficult to read in parts; it is a tear jerker and emotional in places。 Overall, highly recommend this book。 It is worth anyone’s time to read this remarkable story, which is not found in textbooks。
Sarah L。,
My brother recommended this, and I’m glad I read it。 It was quite the story, and it’s crazy to believe it’s true。 More than anything, I’m ashamed of how little I knew about the Korean War。 There were some minor things I would have changed or wanted more info on, but overall it was a good read。
Donna,
Amazing book。 It was a good follow-up after reading Truman。

A fabulous must-read for everyone。 This would be especially valuable as part of homeschool curriculum。 I knew The Korean War was considered the ‘forgotten war’ but didn’t realize how little I knew of it until reading this book。 There’s so much great world history in Devotion, as well as incredible personal stories as the author follows both carrier pilots and marines through the war’s early conflicts。 It’s a shame guys like Jessie Brown, Tom Hudner, Sergeant Devins, and the many other brave men A fabulous must-read for everyone。 This would be especially valuable as part of homeschool curriculum。 I knew The Korean War was considered the ‘forgotten war’ but didn’t realize how little I knew of it until reading this book。 There’s so much great world history in Devotion, as well as incredible personal stories as the author follows both carrier pilots and marines through the war’s early conflicts。 It’s a shame guys like Jessie Brown, Tom Hudner, Sergeant Devins, and the many other brave men who fought against communism and stood by each other through absolute hell aren’t more widely known。 I already feel like I should read it again to cement more names that should be remembered in my mind。 。。。more
Kathryn,
Exceptional。Gentlemen, military history enthusiasts, this one is for you。 "Devotion" follows the true story of two naval aviators during the Korean War, one of whom, Jesse Brown, was the first black naval carrier pilot。 This book was about so much more than race。 The story may be a bit hagiographic, but I could hardly put it down。 These were real people, and their story is told in a gripping, well-paced, and compelling way。I didn't know much about the Korean war beyond what's briefly covered in Exceptional。Gentlemen, military history enthusiasts, this one is for you。 "Devotion" follows the true story of two naval aviators during the Korean War, one of whom, Jesse Brown, was the first black naval carrier pilot。 This book was about so much more than race。 The story may be a bit hagiographic, but I could hardly put it down。 These were real people, and their story is told in a gripping, well-paced, and compelling way。I didn't know much about the Korean war beyond what's briefly covered in US History II and a few things from MASH。 I did some light research - mostly checking to see who would live through the events of the book。 Knowing how it would end did not make finishing the book any easier, but this is definitely a story worth reading。 。。。more

Jeannette,
This book is required reading for anyone who wants to learn about the Korean War from those who lived it。 QI am humbled and grateful for those who shared their painful, yet uplifting stories, and for those who penned those stories in this book。
Katie Peyton,

Jeff Burket,
Definitely an interesting and somewhat compelling story; I can see why they are apparently making a movie about it。 I just wasnt impressed with the book。 The characters didnt have much depth, the connection/relationships between characters never seemed that deep, and whole threads of the story (i。e。 the marines) didnt really connect at all with the main throughline of the Corsair pilots。 This story had popped up as a recommended read after I finished Unbroken by Laura Hillebrand; but this book j Definitely an interesting and somewhat compelling story; I can see why they are apparently making a movie about it。 I just wasnt impressed with the book。 The characters didnt have much depth, the connection/relationships between characters never seemed that deep, and whole threads of the story (i。e。 the marines) didnt really connect at all with the main throughline of the Corsair pilots。 This story had popped up as a recommended read after I finished Unbroken by Laura Hillebrand; but this book just isnt of the same caliber。 Perhaps its best recommended for a teen reader starting to wade into historical accounts and biography。 。。。more
Dulce,
Not a book I would have picked on a shelf to read。 My husband kept recommending I read it, especially with the moving coming out。 Well I instantly got sucked in。 I could not put this book down。 Made me cry。 Made me laugh。 What a beautiful well rounded story!!!!
Michael,
Great and very noteworthy story but the author is overly romantic for me。 Each paragraph could be scored by Hans Zimmer。 In my view this comes at the expense of important historical nuance。
Tamora McElreavy,

Charlotte,
What a great story of courage, duty and heroism that was only sub-par because of the writing。 In the hands of Laura Hildebrandt this would have been amazing。 There was little if any true character development and to me, the hype over this book is artificial。 I suspect that the movie will actually be better and I am confident I know exactly which scenes in the book will be in the movie。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Why would the first African American USN fighter pilot be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice during the Korean War (and become the Navy's first pilot to die in action during that "police action") for a country that would not rent his widow a hotel room to attend a ceremony honoring a white pilot's couragous but hopeless attempt to rescue him? Jeanne,
This book was well written and very interesting。 It was recommended by a friend who knew that my father was in the Navy during the Korean Conflict。 Turns out - my dad was on the ship with these two men and knew of this event。 Tom Hudner even spoke at one of his Navy reunions。 Brotherhood in the military can cross many lines - including racial during a time when those lines weren't often crossed。 Read this book and learn a lot about the human condition as well as what 'real' men look like。 This book was well written and very interesting。 It was recommended by a friend who knew that my father was in the Navy during the Korean Conflict。 Turns out - my dad was on the ship with these two men and knew of this event。 Tom Hudner even spoke at one of his Navy reunions。 Brotherhood in the military can cross many lines - including racial during a time when those lines weren't often crossed。 Read this book and learn a lot about the human condition as well as what 'real' men look like。 。。。more

Daniel Williams,
This was an amazing book on so many levels。 My first time reading a military story but it was so much more than that。 It’s about two navy fighter pilots that come from completely different backgrounds yet find themselves in the Korean War。 A definite must read。
Yvonne Reynders,
A bit dry and slow in parts but overall it was a great telling of a true story。 I'm excited for the movie to come out I think the movie may be better at conveying emotions。 A bit dry and slow in parts but overall it was a great telling of a true story。 I'm excited for the movie to come out I think the movie may be better at conveying emotions。 。。。more

Fascinating story of the first Navy Medal of Honor winner from the Korean War。 Gripping chapters about the battle of Chosin Resevoir。
Bill,
I read this in 2 days, because it was so inspiring。 In the air and on the ground, what a horrendous war that our troops fought to defend freedom。 Jesse Brown showed the world that it is not about the color of one's skin, but the determination in one's heart that makes us Americans。 Max respect to the grunts on the ground who overcame poor leadership but fought and died with bravery and tenacity。 I read this in 2 days, because it was so inspiring。 In the air and on the ground, what a horrendous war that our troops fought to defend freedom。 Jesse Brown showed the world that it is not about the color of one's skin, but the determination in one's heart that makes us Americans。 Max respect to the grunts on the ground who overcame poor leadership but fought and died with bravery and tenacity。 。。。more
